A place for everything.

Taking a pair of dividers, I am marking of the space needed for each stone. This is a little tricky because I need to leave just the right amount of gap between the stones, so that when they are set down into the prongs they end up being edge to edge. The edge of a stone is called the girdle. If I don't allow enough space, they may wind up overlapping each other. Overlapping girdles greatly increases the risk of breaking, or chipping the stones while tightening them. It also increases the risk of the wearer of the ring to chip a stone if it gets banged up against something. Spacing is absolutely critical!
