After marking all the spaces I take a small round bur, and drill out a pilot hole. The wax is slightly transparent, so you can see the path of the hole all the way through. The holes in the shank are for easy cleaning. In the picture you can see I started cutting the holes larger with a setting bur. The setting bur is shaped like the bottom of a diamond (or pavillion). This bur cuts the "seat" for the stone, and at the correct diameter. In setting the diamonds, their pavillions will rest on and be supported by the "seats" of the same shape.
